Q

How would you describe the novel Spies?

A

. Reflective tone - teasing out of the truth from the past (mostly explores Stephens inner world).

. Retrospective narrative viewpoint - story commences in the present with Stephen’s return to London. It then takes us back in time to his boyhood during WWII (however Frayne uses continues to use the present tense to retain the immediacy of the past experience).

. Fragmented memory - starts to slowly piece things together, he speaks of his younger self in 3rd person and 1st person.

. Oscillating perspectives - while the narrative is presented entirely from “the protagonists” perspective, Frayne moves between the first and third person.

. Use of imagery and symbolism - the privet, the bayonet, the cigarettes, the silver framed photo and the tunnel.
