Q

What is bump mapping?

A
  • Method of representing a bumpy or tactile surface on a CAD model
  • Simulates bumps or wrinkles on a CAD model

Q

What is polygon modelling?

A
  • Used to compose images in 3D
  • Object is split into many polygons (used in STL files)
  • Allows for texture mapping as polygons give a more realistic surface

Q

What is specularity in terms of lighting?

A
  • Represents the amount of reflectivity a surface has
  • Helps to calculate the highlights and shadows present on an object
  • Creates ‘rings’ of reflection on an object

Q

What is image-based lighting (IBL)?

A
  • Simulates how light and shadow from a real environment would interact with a CAD model
  • Image is projected onto a dome or sphere which is used to simulate lighting for render scene

Q

What is a high dynamic range image (HDRI)?

A
  • Creates multiple exposures of an image to change the way lighting interacts with a CAD model
  • Enhances colour and shadow, plus creates a 3D environment for rendering

Q

What are volumetrics?

A
  • Method of giving light volume in a render (easier to perceive)
  • E.g. light passing through smoke, light through a window, through a forest canopy

Q

What is depth of field?

A
  • Technique used to guide a viewer’s eye to a focal point in an image
  • Certain areas are blurred to create foreground/background and to force viewer to see areas in focus

Q

What is a distant light?

A
  • Emits uniform light from one place to another, specified by user
  • Effects entire scene
  • Intensity of light doesn’t diminish over distance, useful for uniform lighting

Q

What is a spotlight?

A
  • Emanates from a single source, disperses in a cone over the scene

Q

What is ambient lighting?

A
  • Lighting that effects the entire scene and all objects with equal intensity and colour
  • Set by user, uniform and consistent, used to provide basic lighting to a scene
