Texture And Patterning Flashcards

1
Q

How are double layer knits made?

A

Each layer knitted on a different needle bed, then can be tied together by knitting on both needle beds.

Q

What kind of machines are double layer knits made on?

A

-flat machines or circular machines with two needle beds, as long as there is a individual needle selection facility

Q

How can varied stitch length be produced?

A

Advanced machines can vary length from one needle to the next to create texture or opaque areas of knit

Q

What is multi-gauging?

A

MG is a way to vary stitch lengths where two or more stitch length can be used in different parts of a fabric

Q

What is ‘laying-in’? How is it produced?

A

When a special ‘laying-in’ yarn carrier is used just ahead of the normal yarn carrier, the LI carrier place yarn in between the knit, trapping it in the fabric without actually knitting it in.

11
Q

How is sliver knit produced?

A

Slivers of fibre are presented to needles as they rise to collect new yarn in the knitting sequence
As the needles go to know-over depth, the yarn produces plain knit stitches and the fibre creates tufts that stick out on the reverse side of the fabric.

Q

What is sliver knitting used for?

A
  • Makes fake fur for coats, toys and furnishings

- Different colours and fibre lengths can be used to create patterns that looks like animal fur

15
Q

How does back-coating do to fake fur?

A

Prevents fibre pile from pulling out during use

Makes fabrics more stiff, rigid and dimensionally stable

16
Q

How are sinker loops made?

A

Circular single jersey machines have blades between needles that provide tension while knitting normally. On some advanced machines these sinkers can also produce loops of yarn that appear from the reverse side of fabric.

17
Q

What are sinker loops fabrics used for?

A

Towelling, baby-grows, beach wear, car upholstery etc

18
Q

How many types of sinker loops can some advanced machines make?

A

Three, no loop, short loop, or long loop. Patterns can be made by mixing loop lengths

19
Q

How can sinker loops become velour fabrics?

A

By cropping the loops

20
Q

What are the advantages of sinker loop fabrics?

A
  • normally loops are fairly short and inter yarn friction hold the pile to the base meaning they do not need back-coating to be secured.
  • have good drape, and are extensible so good for clothing
  • air easily trapped in the pile, making them warmer
21
Q

How are knitted / raised floats produced?

A

-knitted using tuck stitches and missed stitches, creating floats on the reverse of fabric.

22
Q

What is ‘loop back fabric’?

A

When floats are produced across 3 or 4 needles at every second course, the reverse will be covered in loops, creating loop-back fabric.

23
Q

What does raising do to loop back fabrics?

A

Makes the fabric into fleece or ‘brushed back fabric’

24
Q

What are loop back fabrics used for after raising?

A

To produce sweatshirts, joggers, as they are warmer and thicker than plain knits
