What is texture?
Texture is the surface treatment or the “feel” of merchandise.
Smooth Surfaces
Reflect light and appear brighter.
Rough Surfaces
Holds onto light ad appear darker.
Rough Textures
Seem heavier and suggest more “weight”
Smooth Textures
Seem to take up less size and volume.
Textures can be suggestive
The can suggest familiar symbols by which the display person attempts to explain the merchandise, in terms of surrounding materials.
Textures can be suggestive: Soft silks and satin
Suggest femininity and sensuousness.
Textures can be suggestive: Velvet
Deep and rich, dark and mysterious, subtle, elegant and expensive.
Textures can be suggestive: Rough textures such as burlap, coarse linens, nubby wools and tweeds
Are masculine, outdoorsy, rugged, natural, earthy and wholesome
Textures can be suggestive: Gravel, sand, stones, brick and ground up cork
Suggest the great open spaces; sports wear, beach wear, camping and the country.
The use of opposite textures
Can work effectively in promoting other types of merchandise especially when humor, scale or shock is the attention getting device to bring the shopper over to the display.
