Homophonic

Monophonic

Heterophonic

Polyphonic
Multiple independent melodies occurring simultaneously; often referred to as counterpoint
Chordal
A texture that primarily consists of chords, emphasizing harmony rather than melody
Thick Texture
A rich, layered sound with many parts or voices
Thin Texture
A sparse sound with few parts or voices, often emphasizing clarity of melody
Layered
A texture that builds from simple to complex, adding more musical lines or voices progressively
Static
A texture that features little melodic movement, focusing instead on sustained tones or chords
Drone
A sustained tone or chord that underpins other musical lines, creating a sense of harmonic grounding
Call and Response
A texture involving a leader (call) followed by a group or echo (response)
Round/Fugue
A piece in which a theme is introduced by one voice and then imitated by others
