Binary Form
A structure consisting of two distinct sections (A-B)
Ternary Form
A three-part structure (A-B-A) where the first section is repeated after a contrasting section
Strophic Form
A song structure where the same music is repeated for each stanza or verse of lyrics
Through Composed/Progressive
A structure with continuous, non-repetitive music, often changing with each section
Theme and Variation
A form where a main theme is presented and followed by a series of variations on that theme
Rondo Form
A form characterized by the recurring theme (A) interspersed with contrasting sections (A-B-A-C-A, etc.)
Verse Chorus Form
A common song structure where verses alternate with a recurring chorus (A-B-A-B)
Interlude
A short, connecting section that occurs between major parts of a composition
Motif
A short musical idea or phrase that serves as a building block for a larger work
Bridge
A contrasting section of new material that connects two sections, often providing a transition
