Gerunds and Gerundives
Verbs used as nouns
“Laughing is my favourite pastime”
(laughing - Gerund)
Verbs used as adjectives
“I was aware of the laughing lady in the corner”
(Laughing - gerundive)
Sentences
A complete sentence requires a subject and a finite verb
Finite verb: “complete”
Non-finite verb: (present/ past participles and infinitives) Needs an auxiliary verb (helping verb) in order to be complete
Commands assume a subject
“Jump” has an implied subject
Compound sentence: comprised of two main clauses and a coordination conjunction (FANBOYS!
Complex sentence: compromised of a main (independent clause) and subordinate conjunctions (dependent sentence) joined sign a subordination conjunction
Subordinating conjunctions —>
Periodic: if the main clause is at the end of the sentence
Loose: if the main clause is at the beginning of the sentence
Style
Incorporates everything:
Metaphors, similes, personification, sarcasm
Irony
Tone
Reflects on how the author feels about the topic
persuade audience towards certain feeling judgments, or opinions
Understanding ton reveals the purpose of the passage
Attitude
Intention
The writers aim in writing
Consider:
his intentions towards the subject
his intention towards the audience
