Textiles and Fibres Flashcards
Define natural polymers
Can come from a plant, insects and animals where they are usually some form of protein.
Give 6 examples of natural polymers?
Cotton, Linen, Hemp, Jute, Silk, Wool
Give the properties of cotton?
Absorbent, strong, hardwearing, smooth, easy to care for.
Give the properties of linen?
Strong, absorbent, hardwearing.
Give the properties of hemp?
Absorbent, non-static, naturally lustrous, strong
Give the properties of Jute?
Very absorbent, high tensile strength, antistatic.
Give the properties of wool?
Warm, absorbent, low flammability, good elasticity, crease resistant, strong.
Define a manufactured polymer?
Usually hardwearing. They all tend to come from oil or minerals and are, therefore, not sustainable and not biodegradable.
Name 5 manufactured polymers?
Polyester, Nylon, Polypropylene, Acrylic, Lycra
Give the properties of Polyester?
Strong when wet and dry, flame resistant, thermoforming (can be shaped by heat) hardwearing.
Give the properties of Nylon?
Strong and hardwearing, thermoforming, good elasticity. Resistant to chemicals and perspiration.
Give properties of Polypropylene?
Thermoforming with a low melting point, strong, crease and chemical resistant, hardwearing and durable
Give properties of Lycra?
Strong except when wet, thermoforming, good insulator
Give 3 uses of cotton?
Clothing, bed sheets, canvas
Give 3 uses of linen?
Light weight, table cloth, soft furnishings
