Textiles and Fabrics Flashcards
What is a fibre ?
starting point for all textile products
What is a yarn ?
tiny hair-like structures that are twisted together
What is a natural fibre ?
fibres which are found in both plants and animals
Name three examples of a natural fibre
cotton,wool and silk
What is an synthetic fibre ?
man made fibres and come from a range of sources including coal, oil and minerals.
Name three examples of a synthetic fibre
- polyester
- acrylic
- nylon
Explain why synthetic fibres and not sustainable
they are mostly non-biodegradable
Give examples of useful properties synthetic fibres can be engineering to have
- flame resistance
- crease resistance
- stain resistance
What is a mixed/blended fibre ?
a fibre that has been mixed with other fibres to improve its quality, aesthetics, function or cost of the final fabric.
Explain why you would want a mixed/blended fibre
for aesthetic reasons such as varying lustre or colours.
What is a popular blended fibre ?
polyester cotton (polyester + cotton fibres)
What is a woven fabric ?
a fabric that consists of warp and weft yarns
What does the term ‘warp’ yarn mean ?
yarn that has been woven vertically
What does the term ‘weft’ yarn mean ?
yarn that has been woven horizontally in an under/over configuration
What are the two different categories of non-woven fabrics ?
bonded and felted
What is a bonded fabric ?
a fabric manufactured by applying pressure and heat or adhesives to bond the fibres together
Give three examples of a bonded fabric
- wet wipes
- tea bags
- nappies
What is a felted fabric ?
a fabric manufactured by applying heat, moisture and friction to fibres, which matt together.
Give two examples of what felted fabric is used for
surface of pools and snooker tables
What is a knitted fabric ?
fabrics made up of rows of interlocking loops, also known as stitches.
What are the two most common forms of knitted fabrics ?
weft and warp
