Paper and Boards Flashcards
What does gsm mean?
grams per square metre
Name two common paper weight sizes
80, 90, 100, 120, 130 ,150 ,170 gsm
What weight does a paper need to be over to be classified as a board ?
a weight of over 170 gsm becomes a board and is no longer classified as paper.
Why are boards classified by weight as well as thickness?
depending on the type of board, different sheets may be the same weight but different thicknesses.
Explain what a micron is
a micron is one-thousandth of a millimetre
Name two common types of paper
Layout paper, copier paper, cartridge paper, bleed proof paper, sugar paper.
What weight is thin card normally?
180-300 gsm
Name two common uses of paper
Newspaper, magazines, comics, bus tickets, receipts, toilet paper
Name two common uses of card
Greeting cards, paperback book covers, simple modelling applications
What thickness does cardboard normally start from?
300 microns upwards
Name two common uses of cardboard
Cereal boxes, tissue boxes, sandwich packets, modelling design ideas, making templates
What does the term fluted mean?
the wavy section in corrugated card in between the two layers of thin card
Why is corrugated card used for takeaway food packaging such as pizza boxes ?
- Absorbs knocks and bumps
- Fluted construction gives it good heat-insulating properties
What thickness is mounting board ?
1.4 mm (1400 microns)
Name two common uses of mounting board
picture frame mounts and architectural modelling
Explain what foam board is
Foam board is a lightweight boards that is made up of polystyrene foam sandwiched between two pieces of thin card or paper
State two properties of foam board
lightweight, smooth surface, available in a range of colours, sheet sizes and thicknesses
Name two common uses of foam board
ideal for modelling, point of sale displays
Explain what styrofoam is
styrofoam is the tradename for expanded polystyrene foam
State two properties of styrofoam
available in a wide range of sizes and thicknesses, blue in colour, easy to cut, shape and sand to a smooth finish, strong, lightweight, water-resistant, good-heat insulating properties
Name two common uses of styrofoam
wall insulation material used in caravans, boats and lorries, ideal for creating models, moulds for vacuum formed or glass fibre products
Explain what corriflute is
an extruded corrugated plastic sheet similar in structure and thickness to corrugated cardboard
What is corriflute made from ?
High-impact polystyrene resin
State two properties of corriflute
available in a wide range of colours and sheet sizes, rigid, lightweight, extremely waterproof
Name two common uses of corriflute
estate agents signs on houses, signs outside car forecourts and shops, plastic containers, packaging, point-of-sale displays and for modelling purposes.
