SST focuses on 2 main classes of psychological goals:
1) one compromises preparatory goals such as knowledge acquisition, initiating friendships, or exploring novel experiences
2)concerns feeling states, emotional satisfaction, and a sense of belonging, purpose and worth
SST claims that when time horizons are long and nebulous,
people prioritize goals that prepare them for seemingly endless and winding roads ahead
SST claims that as time horizons grow shorter, emotional goals are
prioritized over exploration
Little evidence that older people are happier than younger people, but
older people are less unhappy than younger people
Positivity effect
developmental shift in which a well documented attentional bias that favors negative information, once presumed to be universal, becomes positive with age
Top down explanation for positivity affect:
older people are capable of processing negative information, yet they do not
Age is associated with increasing interest in emotionally meaningful activities and social partners
prosocial tendencies increase with age
