Describe the settlements in St Augustine
Located in present-day Florida, founded by Juan Ponce de Leon. Attacked French protestants in Fort Caroline. Defended St. Augustine b/c it was too vulnerable to Europeans
Describe the settlements in Santa Fe
Established in 1610, Santa Fe became the kingdom of New Mexico. Priests tried to abandon old ways to focus on the new generation but this would cause a mutiny. Pope forced the city to go back to old ways
Why was there a Pueblo revolt?
The settlers wanted to drive the Spaniards out of the Pueblo, but ultimately failed because the Spaniards are “God’s people”.
Where did the French and Dutch establish colonies in the New World?
Dutch established on Manhattan Island and French in Canada
How did the Dutch Settlement in New Amsterdam make money?
They traded Fur for guns, blankets, and alcohol.
Who would serve as the laborers in New Amsterdam?
Slaves
What was the Dutch attitude towards religion?
They were not religious, religion shouldn’t play a role in society.
What kind of relationship did the French have with Native Americans?
It was mutual, the Algonquin fisherman, explorers, and fur traders kept contact with the French in exchange for firearms.
What is an indenture?
A labor contract for young men and women to work as indentured servants for 5-7 years. After this time period, they will be free.
What is a headright system?
those who paid their own passage to Virginia received fifty acres plus an additional fifty for each servant or family member they brought with them.
What were Maroon communities?
groups that resisted recapture and eked out a living from the land, rebuilding their communities as best they could.
Why did English colonies transition from indentured servants to slave labor?
There was a crushing demand for cash crops such as sugar and tobacco.
