Who were the Puritans?
English protestants who wanted to purify the church b/c it was too catholic
What was predestination?
A belief in which only God could control whether you go to heaven

- Geography: taking orders from a distant papacy in Rome.
- Latin Mass: Puritans wanted sermons in the vernacular
- Corruption: Priests forgave sins for money and had prostitutes
- Heirarichal organization: pope, Cardinal, Bishop, Priest
- Rituals: sacraments, pilgrimage, and idols are excessive
What were the 3 key reasons for Puritan colonization in the new world?
- Escape religious persecution
- Save “savage” Indian souls
- Economic aspects
What did Gov. John Winthrop mean when he said he wanted Salem to be a “City up on a hill”?
It meant that he wanted Salem to be a model city for the world to follow, they viewed themselves as God’s chosen people

puritans settled from Massachusetts to Maine. Pilgrims settled at Plymouth
What were the puritans beliefs about morality? Were they strict? What did they say about holidays? about divorces? what sort of crimes did they bring before Puritan courts?
Valued holidays and saints day. no religious weddings. Charges included atheism, drunkenness, missing church, etc. Punished idolatry, blasphemy, sodomy and adultery.
Why did the Massachusetts Bay Colony experience rapid growth?
The population was middle class, and lots of skilled artisans meant it was good for the viability of the colony.
What native american tribes did the Puritans encounter?
Pequots, Wampanoags, and Powhatan.
What happened in King Philip war?
- Destroyed half of New England settlements
- Failed Algonquian alliance with Iroquois
- European strategy of divide and conquer

What happened in the Salem Witch Trials?
2 daughters of Rev. Samuel Paris afflicted w/ accusation. Evidence presented teeth marks, bruises, etc.
