Apley’s Test (Apley’s Scratch Test)
touch middle of back from above and below
+ = degenerative tendonitis
Apprehension test
internal rotation of flexed arm (posterior dislocation)
external rotation of flexed arm (anterior dislocation)
+ = resistance or apprehension = previous trauma
Codman’s sign (Drop arm test)
patient holds arm in air after Dr. lets go from abduction
+ = supraspinatus tendon injury
Dawbarn’s sign
deep palpation of shoulder to find painful area, arm abducted keeping pressure on pain, pain disappears
+ = subacromial bursitis
Dugas’ Test
pt. holds opposite shoulder with hand and tightly touches elbow to chest
+ = propensity for dislocation
Impingement sign
with arm slightly abducted/extended it is flexed
+ = supraspinatus overuse and/or bicipital irritation
Speed’s test
Dr. resistance to flexion of the shoulder by pt.
+ = pain in bicipital groove = bicipital tendonitis
