Test for protein
Put (3cm cubed) food solution into a test tube using a syringe.
Add (3cm cubed) Biuret solution using a clean plastic pipette.
Gently shake the test tube
Observe results
Test for fats (lipids and oils)
Put (2cm cubed) oil in to a test tube using a syringe
Add (2cm cubed) ethanol using a plastic pipette
Shake the test tube
Pour into a test tube containing water
List of food groups (most needed to least)
Vegetables, carbohydrates, protein, dairy, oils and spreads
Testing for sugar
Put (5cm cubed) of food solution into a test tube
Add (5cm cubed) of Benedict’s solution to the food sample which should show a blue colour.
Put the test tube into a beaker of hot water for a few minutes
Observe results
Testing for starch
Put a few drops of the food solution into the spotting tile
Add two or three drops of iodine solution to the food sample
Observe results
Results for protein test
A positive result for protein shows the pale blue colour turns to violet.
A negative result for protein stays pale blue
Results for sugar test
A positive result is when the blue colour turns orange or red - glucose is present
A negative result is when there is no colour change
Results for starch test
A positive result is when a blue black colour is seen - starch is present
A negative result is when there is no colour change, (stays brown) - no starch is present
Results for fats test
A positive result for lipids is the solution becomes cloudy as
an emulsion is formed.
A negative result for lipids is there is no colour change.
Consequences of bad diet
No energy, bones and tissue are not mending properly
