Animal and Plant Cells Flashcards
Cell wall
A strong, protective structure that surrounds a plant cell. Cell walls provide support, strength, and protection for plants and help plants hold their shape.
Cell membrane
The cell membrane separates and protects the interior of a cell from the outside environment. It controls the movement of substances in and out of the cell. Is selectively permeable.
Cytoplasm
Jelly like substance that keeps organelles in place and gives the cell its shape
Vacuole
Stores food, water, and waste
Ribosomes
Creates proteins for the cell
Nucleus
Contains chromosomes (DNA) and controls the movements of the parts of the cell
Chloroplast
Uses light energy to create food for the cell. Contains chlorophyll (a green pigment)
