Tests for Anions Flashcards
1
Q
Descibe the test to see if carbonates are present
A
- Add a dilute acid
- The carbonate and acid will react and form carbon dioxide and so effervesence is given off
- Bubble the gas through limewater, if the limewater turns cloudy white it means that carbon dioxide is present and so we started with a carbonate
2
Q
Describe the test to see if halide ions are present
A
- Add dilute nitric acid
- Add dilute silver nitrate
- A silver halide will be formed
3
Q
What colour is silver chloride precipitate?
A
White
4
Q
What colour is silver bromide precipitate?
A
Cream
5
Q
What colour is silver iodide precipitate?
A
Yellow
6
Q
Describe the test to see if sulfate ions are present
A
- Add dilute hydrochloric acid
- Add barium chloride solution
- If sulfate ions are present, a white precipitate will form
