Q
Describe the practical for chrmatorgraphy
A
- Use a pencil and a ruler to draw a line 2cm from the bottom of the chromatorgaphy paper
- Use the pencil to mark 5 pencil spots at equal distances across the line and label them A-D and label the last one U for ‘unknown
- Use a capillary tube to transfer each of the different colours to the pencil spots
- Pour 1cm3 of water into a beaker
- Attatch a lolipop stick to the chromatorgraphy paper and lower it into the beaker, making sure that the bottom of the paper is under the water but the pencil start line is above the surface of the water
- Place a lid onto the beaker to prevent the evaporation of the water.
- Now the water will start to move up and carry the colours with it, take the paper out of the beaker when the water has travelled 3/4 up the paper, and use a ruler and pencil to draw a line at the solvent front
- Now hang the paper to dry
