Tests Flashcards
What bloods do we take for PET?
U&E’s
LFT’s
Uric acid
Clotting
FBC
(Blue, purple and yellow bottle)
What are U’s and E’s and what do they test?
Urea and electrolytes
Assess kidney (renal function) and electrolyte balance
What could high levels of uric acid suggest?
(Kidney function test)
Organ damage resulting from pre eclampsia
What do LFT’s look for?
Measure different substances made by the liver (eg enzymes and proteins) to check how well it is working
Raised ALT and AST levels may indicate organ damage from pre eclampsia
How does pre eclampsia affect clotting?
Partial thromboplastin time - used to measure the time it takes a persons blood to clot may be prolonged by pre eclampsia.
How does pre eclampsia affect a full blood count?
Low platelet count
types of electrolytes
Sodium
Potassium
Why are electrolytes important?
Balance the amount of water in your body
Keep your heart rate and Rhythm steady
Keep your blood pressure stable
What tests do we carry out at booking and why?
MSU, FBC, group and save, ferritin, hep B sickle cell and thalassaemia, syphillis, HIV.
MSU - pick up any infections which more susceptible to during pregnancy
Group and save - like to know which blood group you are as if your rhesus negative may need something called anti D during your pregnancy.
FBC - to check your iron levels to see if your anaemiac, quite common during pregnancy.
Hep B, sickle cell and thalasseamia - as these all negatively affect baby.
Ferritin - is essentially your iron stores, we’re checking to see if your iron deficient. Can have low iron stores and normal iron levels, which is why can feel tired regardless of iron tablets.
What bloods do we take for PPROM?
FBC and CRP
