testing Flashcards
What elements can be detected by a flame test?
Lithium, sodium, potassium, calcium, barium
What elements can be found by adding sodium hydroxide solution?
Positive ions; Aluminium, calcium, magnesium, copper, iron (II), iron (III), ammonium
What elements are found by adding sliver nitrate solution?
Halides; Chloride, Bromide, iodine
What can indicate the presence of a sulphate?
Barium chloride solution and a white precipitate.
What can be found by adding sodium hydroxide solution and aluminium powder?
Nitrates, they aren’t soluble so add- and if the gas turns red litmus paper blue it is a nitrate reduced to ammonia.
What instrumental method can be used to identify metal ions in drinking water or metal alloys?
Atomic spectroscopy
What instrumental method can be used to identify individual compounds e.g. detecting pesticides in water?
Infred spectroscopy
What instrumental method can be used for determining the concentration of nitrates or phosphates in water?
Ultraviolet spectroscopy
What instrumental method would be used for detecting organic molecules?
Nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry
What instrumental method separates molecules or atoms according to their mass?
Mass spectrometry
What instrumental method is a useful way of separating mixtures?
Gas liquid chromatography
