Testicular exam Flashcards
Explain a hydrocele
A hydrocele is a collection of fluid in the scrotum. Most develop for no apparent reason, are harmless and can be left alone. If needed, a small operation can usually cure the problem. In a small number of cases, a hydrocele is due to an underlying problem with a testicle (testis).
What is the condition where fluid collects in the testicals
hydrocele
Explain testicular torsion
Testicular torsion is an emergency condition. It happens when the spermatic cord, which provides blood flow to the testicle, rotates and becomes twisted. The twisting cuts off the testicle’s blood supply and causes sudden pain and swelling. Testicular torsion requires surgery right away to save the testicle.
An emergency condition where the testes twist what is this called ?
Testicular torsion
Explain a varicocele
Where the veins to the testes get dilated and feels like a bag of worms, not tender or painful but can be heavy
What condition of the testes feels like a bag of worms ?
varicolcele
Explain testicular tumour
Lump, hard, won’t be painful or tender.
Whats a Spermatocele
Spermatoceles are also known as spermatic cysts. They are fluid-filled masses, often painless, and they grow near the testicles.
If you think there is part of a hernia within the testes, what should you do ?
Listen for bowel sounds
Explain Transillumination
Transillumination involves using a pen torch to shine light from behind a scrotal lump to observe whether the light travels through and illuminates the lesion. The technique helps to assess whether a mass is fluid-filled or not, as fluid will transilluminate and solid masses will not.
What test could you do to differentiate if a lump is fluid-filled or a solid mass?
Transillumination test
Explain Epididymitis
Epididymitis is where a tube (the epididymis) at the back of the testicles becomes swollen and painful. It’s often caused by an infection and is usually treated with antibiotics.
What condition is usually called by an infection and is painful within the testes
Epididymitis
What is the epididymis?
The epididymis is a coiled tube behind each testis. Each epididymis is linked to the ejaculatory duct by a tube called the vas deferens.
