Knowledge about Paradigm
Identify the answer most closely relates to the paradigm identified.
Determine whether a question asks you to use a particular theory, practice model, or perspective when selecting the right answer.
Qualifying Words
Look for words like best, next, least, most, first, next.
: a qualifier is a work or phase that proceeds an adjective or adverb, increasing or decreasing that subject.
Don’t Forget the Basics
- Make sure to be well rested, emotional and social needs are met.
- Build in relaxation into the study plan.
- Breathing techniques during the test.
Resist ‘BUZZWORDS’
Words such as ‘rapport,’ ‘empathy,’ ‘support,’ ‘support system,’ ‘joining with a client,’ ‘strength perspective,’ ‘from a clients perspective,’ and so on.
Just because an answer has buzzwords in it does not make the answer correct.
Read the full response, some parts of the response may be incorrect.
Read Questions, Then Pick the Right Answer
- Read the question exactly as it is written.
- Ask “what is this question about?”
- Think abut the important concepts.
- Read the question again.
- THEN look at the response choices.
- Eliminate one, then repeat steps until only one answer remains.
Identify Place in Problem Solving Process
Look for “when gathering information on the problem” or “when developing the contract.”
When question asks what actions a social worker should take, you should determine where in the problem solving processing.
Age of Client
Assess what behavior is appropriate for that age group i.e. imaginary friend at age 4 vs. 35.
If the age of client is indicated it is usually relevant to selecting the correct response choice.
VERBS
Wrong answers usually uses words like ignore or wait or forget.
Actions social workers do: provide, explore, engage.
PRIORITIZING CLIENTS NEEDS
Questions asking social worker to do “first,” “most,” or “next,” or pick out the problem that is “most” important, use Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Model to prioritize and problem solve for the best answer.
