Why was it important for Jesus to shown as related to the Jewish past?
Because Matthew is trying to show Jesus as a continuation of the Jewish faith. And their denial of Jesus was the reason the ‘kingdom’ had not come with the new messiah (Jesus)

The Jewish people thought that they wer the heirs to the kingdom of God.

The Kingdom of God had been promised to them in the old testament.
