Who were the Sadducees?
A
- The Jewish ruling elite.
- Perhaps closest alligned group to the Romans (High priest was chosen by Romans)
- Had conservative approach to Judaism (didn’t want change) and resisted Jesus’s teachings.
- Main power was from Temple/Jerusalem
- Disbanded/destroyed after temples distruction in 70 AD.

Who were the Pharisees?
A
- Jewish group who wanted to conserve spiritual/ceremonail purity.
- Avoided non-Jews and ‘Sinners’
- Popular amongst Jews versus the aristocratic Sadducees
- Adaptive approach to Judaism (Willing to change)
- Some opposed others allowed Jesus to teach/preach.
- Main power base was in the Synagogue/Rural areas.

- Professional class
- Often had other jobs
- Could be Pharisees or Sadducees
- Were Jewish
- Approach to Jesus often more based on weather they were also Pharisees or Sadducees.

Who were the Zealots?
A
Also known as the ‘Sicarii’ (because of the knife they used to assassinate) the Zealots opposed Roman rule in Palestine/Israel.
- One of Jesus’ disciples was Zealot (Simon),
- Zealots may have seen Jesus as another revolutionary versus Roman rule. (i.e. a friend)

- A group dissatisfied with the political and religious situation in Palestine.
- Seperated themselves from both Pharisees and Sadducees.
- Gathered around a figure called ‘the Teacher of Righteousness”
- Writers of the dead sea scrolls.
- Likely saw Jesus as another false prophet
