Test Q's Per Instructors Flashcards
What is the lifespan of standard asphalt shingles?
Approx. 20 years
Roofing Underlayment at Rake (Gable) Edge, and Drip (Eave) Edge:
Underlayment goes UNDER flashing at Rake Edge
Underlayment goes OVER flashing at Drip Edge
Min/Max Riser Heights:
4” Min
7 3/4” Max
3/8” Max Allowable Height difference at risers.
Handrails are required when:
Stairs have four or more risers.
Walking Surface with edge that is 30” or more above ground
Sub Panel Grounding:
Grounds and Neutrals must be SEPERATE at sub-panels.
If bonded, it gives electricity a path to RETURN to it’s source, IE the entire circuit and all metal it’s in contact with will be energized.
(Neutrals bonded at floating bus bar, Grounds bonded at bus bar bonded to panel)
How should a dishwasher be secured (most common)
Brackets screwed into underside of the countertop
Max water temp:
120 F
What is a girder?
A support beam of a subfloor
Proper height for photo-electric eyes?
4-6” above the floor
Required slope for concrete landings/patios?
1/4” per foot
Two layer of underlayment are required at roofs with a pitch of:
2:12 to 4:12
Location and purpose of expansion tanks for steam heat systems:
The attic
Expansion Tanks give space for hot water to expand within the closed system
Height of siding from grade:
8” no matter the siding material
Every Habitable room in a house needs to have:
A heat source
A chimney with deteriorated mortar and missing bricks requires:
Re-pointing
Tuck pointing is the original mortar install/application, Re-pointing removes existing and adds new mortar
Wires outside a gas furnace are scorched, I should suspect:
Flame Roll-out
Most common cause of mold growth/moisture issues in the attic:
Air leaking from house into the attic
Drainage tile can best be described as:
A pipe set in gravel continuously along the exterior of a building.
Holes will be oriented down/at bottom half of pipe
(With the intent to move water laterally as the trench the pipe is in fills w/ water)
What distributes the weight from floor joists to the ground?
Floor joists –> Foundation –> Footings –> Ground
What is required when an electric water heater is installed at the second story?
A sealed catch pan, with attached drain
Chimney’s Leaning Above Roofline:
Most likely tall, unlined chimneys venting an oil-fired appliance.
Sulphur from exhaust gases condenses and forms sulphuric acid, causing mortar to deteriorate.
Wind-driven rain causes mortar to swell due to moisture, and the chimney leans to the leeward side.
Air return outside a room with supply:
Requires a 3/4” gap at the bottom of the door to allow proper circulation.
Without it, the room can become pressurized and will not heat/cool because it can’t accept any more air.
