Map
A map is something that shows a certain region, city, or country. It can be used to show geography, borders and resources. As well as population.
It is important to be able to read a map because you won’t always have your phone available. It requires being able to observe your surroundings.
Absolute location, Relative location,
Absolute location - exact location on the earth (coordinates). Example: 43N, 56W
Coordinates tell you hemispheres - 42N, 64E = Northern and Eastern hemisphere
*Relative location - where somewhere is located in relation to somewhere else. Example: Michigan is NORTH of Ohio
Latitude
Lines of Latitude are lines that run East to West. At 0 degrees latitude, it equally divides the Earth into the Northern and Southern hemispheres.
Equator
The EQUATOR is a line of latitude that divides the Northern and Southern hemispheres.
*Your proximity (how close you are) to the Equator impacts your climate.
Longitude
Lines of Longitude are vertical lines that run North and South.
PRIME MERIDIAN
The PRIME MERIDIAN is a line of longitude that divides the Eastern and Western hemispheres.
Culture
The way of life of a group of people.
Climate/plants/animals/environment = by themselves are NOT culture
→ How humans RESPOND to the environment IS culture (human response to the environment)
**Example: it’s cold in Michigan so we wear coats
Cultural traits
Cultural traits make up culture. Examples YOU CAN SEE Family Structure
Human Response to the Environment (animals/geography alone are not culture)
Clothing, Food, Holidays, Appearance, Technology, Jobs, Sports, Education, Entertainment, Literature, Religion, Festivals, Architecture, Monuments, Dance, Housing, Transportation, Military / law, Health / medicine, Symbols / Flags

Unwritten rules of behavior that are considered (un) acceptable to a group or society. Example: it’s a norm to not shout in public places.
Paraphrasing-what is it, why important?
How does purpose change your paraphrase?
Putting something (text, videos, audio, images) into your OWN UNDERSTANDING
*Pulling out information that fits with your topic (relevant)
*Short, succinct bullets
*Paraphrasing is NOT summarizing - it’s pulling out the main ideas that fit your topic
Paraphrasing Steps (in order)
1- Chunk the text (smaller pieces)
2- Read thoughtfully
3- THINK
-What did I just read?
