Test for halide ions Flashcards
What is used to test for halide ions
Silver nitrate solution
How do you test for halide ions
- Dissolve spatula measure of solid sample in dilute nitric acid
- Add 1cm^3 of silver nitrate solution
- Add 1cm^3 of dilute ammonia solution
- Add excess dilute ammonia solution
- If precipitate remains then repeat the process using concentrated ammonia solution in place of dilute ammonia solution
What are the deductions if the observation is a white ppt which is soluble in dilute ammonia solution to form a colourless solution
Chloride ion
White ppt is AgCl
What are the deductions if the observation is a cream ppt, which is not soluble in dilute ammonia solution but is soluble in concentrated ammonia solution to form a colourless solution
Bromide ion
Cream ppt is AgBr
What are the deductions if the observation is a yellow ppt, which is not soluble in either dilute ammonia solution or concentrated ammonia solution
Iodide ions
Yellow ppt is AgI
What are the deductions if the observation is no ppt forms
No halide ions present
