Test For Carbonate And Hydrogencarbonate Ions Flashcards
1
Q
How do you test for carbonate and hydrogencarbonate ions
A
- Place a few cm^3 of dilute acid in a test tube and add a spatula measure of the solid sample
- If there is effervescence, bubble any gas produced into limewater
2
Q
What are the observations for a positive test
A
Effervescence; solid disappears
Gas evolved turns limewater form colourless to milky
3
Q
No effervescence/ no gas produced
A
No carbonate or hydrogencarbonate ions present
