nderstanding the benefits and mechanics of repetition requires that we first briefly analyze why we forget semantic declarative knowledge in the first place.

Modern scientific analysis of forgetting is typically thought to have begun when Hermann Ebbinghaus first introduced his famous “Forgetting Curve” in 1885. His general concept of the exponential decay of memory has since been replicated by thousands of researchers and students of memory, for nearly every type of knowledge and skill acquisition.

The basic Forgetting Curve has the following characteristics:

We start with 100% Retention the moment we first "learn" a new concept
The initial forgetting is "steep", as the short-term memory trace is tenuous and easily lost
The longer we've remembered something already, the less likely we'll fo
