Test Flashcards
Energy Stores
chemical (e.g. fuel + oxygen)
kinetic (in a moving object)
gravitational (due to the position of an object in a gravitational field)
elastic (e.g. in a stretched or compressed spring)
thermal (in a warm object)
magnetic (in two separated magnets that are attracting, or repelling)
electrostatic (in two separated electric charges that are attracting, or repelling)
nuclear (released through radioactive decay, fission or fusion)
How do you measure energy in foods
Kilojoules and joules
How many joules is in one gram calorie
1 gram calorie is equivalent to 4.186 joules
How do you transfer chemical energy from a coal into thermal energy
You burn the substance, coal (a fossil fuel).
Conservation law
Energy can’t disappear, only transfer
Energy measurements
Energy Units and Conversions. 1 Joule (J) is the MKS unit of energy, equal to the force of one Newton acting through one meter. 1 Watt is the power from a current of 1 Ampere flowing through 1 Volt. 1 kilowatt-hour is the energy of one kilowatt power flowing for one hour.
Non renewable
Renewable
Non-renewable resource if when a resource can not be used for then once to release energy. Eg coal, oil and gas.
Renewable resources can be used for then once to create energy like wind, tidal, waves, Biomass and Solar and wood.
conservation
the principle by which the total value of a physical quantity or parameter (such as energy, mass, linear or angular momentum) remains constant in a system which is not subject to external influence.
What is a simple machine
A simple machine makes it easier to lift things, move things and turn thing.Reduces the force that you need to do a job increase the distance that something moves when you apply a force.
The law of convection
A small force that is acting on a bog distance creates a big force. The big force can only travel a small distance. If you could increase the distance as well as the force you to get more force out then you put in
The difference between temperature and energy
Temperature is the same no matter what mass but energy isn’t
What s radiation
Hot things like coal give out light as well as infrared radiation
Infrared radiation
It is basically heat that travels in waves
Transferring radiation
You don’t need particles to transfer energy by radiation. Light and infrared radiation travel through Space.
What is a power station
Thermal power stations burn coal and gas.
