Test 5 The 12 Cranial Nerve's Functions Flashcards
Cranial Nerve I - Olfactory
Carries information about the sense of smell.
Cranial Nerve II - Optic
Carries visual information from the eyes to the brain.
Cranial Nerve III - Oculomotor
Control intrinsic muscles of the eye,
which helps regulate the amount of light entering the eye and aid in focusing on near objects.
Cranial Nerve IV - Trochlear
Controls (innervates) the superior oblique muscle (the “pulley” muscle) of the eye.
Cranial Nerve V - Trigeminal
Responsible for sensation in the face
responsible for motor functions such as biting and chewing.
Cranial Nerve VI - Abducens
Controls the movement of the lateral rectus (eye) in humans.
Cranial Nerve VII - Facial
Controls facial expressions
Controls taste sensation from the anterior two-thirds of the tongue.
Salivary glands.
Somatosensory information from the ear.
Cranial Nerve VIII - Vestibulocochlear
Responsible for hearing, balance, and brings information from the inner ear to the brain.
A humans sense of equilibrium is determined by this nerve.
Cranial Nerve IX - Glossopharyngeal
Provides taste from posterior one-third of the tongue.
Supplies fibers to the tongue, pharynx, and carotid sinus.
Cranial Nerve X - Vagus
Provides sensory and motor information to the viscera (glands, digestion, heart rate).
Cranial Nerve XI - Accessory
Controls muscles used in head movement (trapezius, and sternocleidomastoid muscles).
Cranial Nerve XII - Hypoglossal
Controls muscles of the tongue.
