Test 4: Solutions Flashcards
Whats a pure substance
Substance made up of only one type of particle (atom (Element) or molecule (compound)
Whats a mixture
A combination of two or more substances/components mixed in a variety of proportions, comonents can be separated by physical means
What type of mixture is a solution, why
Its a homogenous mixture because its physically combined (composition looks the same throughout) , made up of a solvent and solute
Whats solubility
The ability of a substance (the solute) to dissolve in solvent/ the extent to which a substance may be dissolved
What does it mean for something to be soluble
More than 0.1 Mol of salt will dissolve in 1.0L of solution, the solute particles can disperse evenly in the solvent
What does it mean for something to have low solubility/ is insoluble
Insoluble doesnt mean it cant dissolve, everything dissolves to some extent, but a small amount dissolves and the rest remains undissolved and typically as a precipitate
Whats a saturated solution
A solution that contains the maximum amount of solute that can be dissolved
Whats an unsaturated solution
A solution in which more solute can be dissolved
Which solutions are conductive and which arent, why
Ionic solutions dissociate in water to produce ions, which are charged particles therefore produce a conductive solution
Molecular solutions (covalent, organic compounds) that dissolve in water produce a nonconductive solution since they cannot dissociate (water cannot break them down because theyre nonpolar), stays as a whole molecule (just dispersed evenly in solvent)
Whats the difference between dissolving and dissociating
Dissolving: breaking solution down into molecules, dispersed evenly in solvent
Dissociating: breaking molecules down into ions
Is a highly soluble molecule always good at dissociating
No, because molecular solutions can dissolve well but cannot break into ions because theyre nonpolar, water cannot break them down more
Can ionic compounds with low solubility dissociate
These ionic compounds can only slightly dissolve in water, but the particles that do dissolve still dissociate into ions, although most of the compound is now a solid precipitate
What does diluting a solution do, what does it mean to dilute something
Causes the concentration of the solute to decrease
The process of adding more solvent to a solution
Whats a standard and unknown solution
Solutions in a titration lab
Standard: the solution whose concentration is known
Unknown: the solution whose concentration is unknown
