First the war was not clear cut conflict between two separate nations
Second supplies for the communist forces from North Vietnam flowed not only across the north south border but also through the neighboring supposedly neutral countries of Cambodia and Laos
Third The government of South Vietnam although it was non-Communist was corrupt unstable and undemocratic the only thing good about it was it was better then the communists
