Test #3- Transcription Flashcards
Where does transcription and translation happen in eukaryotic cells?
in the nucleus – Translation happens in the cytoplasm
Where does transcription and translation happen in prokaryotic cells?
they both happen in the cytoplasm
What is the start codon and what are 3 stop codons?
AUG-start
UAA-stop
UAG-stop
UGA- stop
can genes be transcribes and translated after being transplanted from one species to another?
yes
eg. jelly fish pig
What are the 3 steps in transcription?
initiation, elongation, termination
What does the TATA box need in eukaryotes?
promotor region
what does the cell do to save time during transcription?
It transcribes several mRNA from the same template of DNA strands at the same time
What do introns and extrons do?
intron (JUNK) uncoding region
extron- CODING REGION
What is at the 5’ and the 3’ end?
5’- GTP–capped
3’ poly A tail–AAA
What is RNA splicing?
Deals with spliceosomes and snRNA
-it folds to make loops to cut out the intron
What do ribozymes do?
it is RNA that has a catalytic role (its functional groups do this)
-folds and bubbles to make active cites
What is the importance of interneurons?
Altering RNA splicing–>differential gene expression (can choose what it cuts and keeps)
Exon shuffling
