  1. Majority opinion- has to be written explaining why they voted the way they did
  2. Concurring opinion- agrees with the ruling of the case but not the reasons behind it
  3. Dissenting opinion- opinion that disagrees with both the discussion and the majority reasoning behind it

What are federal courts required to provide?

A
  1. Grand jury- determines if the defendant is to be tried or indicted
  2. Petit jury- 12 member trial jury that must come to a unanimous decision
  3. One judge or more depending on local statutes

3 rules of access to the Supreme Court

A
  1. Cases and controversies- two truly adversarial parties and courts will refuse to recognize its constitutionality until the law is applied
  2. Standing access- substantial stakes, showing injury to oneself
  3. Mootness- disqualified cases that are brought late after the relevant facts have been changed or the problem has been resolved by other means
