Q

Effective milking practices:

A
  • Dry, clean teats
  • Separate towels
  • Post milking dip (critical for contagious mastitis control, as this is there only exposure point to contagious mastitis.
  • Monitor milking equipment to make sure it is still working and flushing the system

Q

Herd management (prevention of mastitis)

A
  • Scrape or flush alley ways at least twice daily to reduce manure build up (environmental mastitis)
  • Observe udders and hind legs at milking time to make sure they are clean (and in good shape) Note: clean is relative, so it is important to have a picture of what a clean cow should look like.
  • Provide fresh feed after milking. This is because the teat orifice will not close for another 20 minutes. So ideally we will want to keep the cow standing for the next twenty minutes, fresh feed accomplishes this as they will stand to eat it.

Q

Objective of environmental management:

A

Is to minimize sources for environmental pathogens, and to minimize environmental components which will reduce the ability of teat orifice to act as a barrier to these contaminants.
Only two reasons for environmental mastitis: a failed barrier or levels of contamination so high the barriers are ineffectual even though they are in tacked.

These pathogens come from the environment alone, not from other cows. Though I would debate the manure came from other cows… But I get his meaning.
