census metropolitan area (CMA)
an urban area in canada with a population of over 100 000. a CMA is centred around a city, and generally extends beyond the borders of a city

much smaller on the isodemographic map, because it’s population is small compared to its landmass
3 important factors:
1) the nature of resources that attract people to the area
2) the transportation methods that were in use when the area was settled
3) the role of government in determining the pattern

DISPERSED
are typically in areas with an agricultural base, because people tend to live on farms that are spread out over a region

CONCENTRATED
occur where other natural resources are present. the economic opportunities that result from the development of the resources draw people to settle closer together near the resource

LINEAR
exists where the economic activities that support people have developed in a line (coastline, highway, rail). people settle alone these areas because they can make a living offering services to travellers. also, along costs where fishing is an important industry
