Test 3 Flashcards
Areas of compromised penetration
Cerebrospinal fluid, bone, prostate, eye, abscesses
Pneumonia Culture
Sputum or BAL from intubated patient
Ulcer culture
After debridement
Abscess culture
Pus from aspiration of drainage
Types of Acceptable Cultures
Body fluids, tissue, pus, exudate - NOT swab cultures
Blood culture timing
2 blood cultures 10 min apart, PRIOR to first dose of antibiotics - NOT existing IV
Blood culture components
Catheter tip + 3 or 4 peripheral cultures, anaerobic transport media for anaerobes
Culturing bacteremia or candidemia
Need 3 or 4 sets of cultures
Culturing for endocarditis
3 for native valve, 4-5 for prostetic
Gram Staining Results
Positive (blue or purple), Negative (red or pink)
Aerobic/Anaerobic/Facultative
Require oxygen/Do not require oxygen/Prefer but don’t need oxygen
Is gram + or - more serious
Gram -
Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC)
Lowest concentration of drug that prevents visibile bacterial growth after 24 hours incubation in specified growth medium
Sensitive Culture
Organism should be eradicated by tx with the antibiotic at the recommended/usual dose
Intermediate Culture
Organism may or may not be eradicated by tx at the recommended/usual dose dependent on achievable drug concentration and organism MIC
