Test 3 Flashcards
Singing and speaking
Basic mechanism is the same but speech generally moves at a faster rate and singing has more extended vowels and is generally at a higher decibel level. Good speech is a foundation for good singing and passing from one to the other with apparent ease is a necessary skill for a professional.
Voiced/unvoiced consonant
Voiced requires vocal fold vibration. Unvoiced does not. There are nine pairs with articulators in same position but are determined by presence of vocal cold vibration.
Common speech faults
Pitch, quantity, rate.
Breathing and support, quality, articulation
Pitch faults
Speaking too high, too low, too restricted a range, speaking in stereotyped pitch patterns
Quantity faults
Too softly, too loudly, too much variation of force
Rate faults
Too fast, too slow, too much variation of rate
4 vocal tech areas that coordinate
Extending vocal range, developing flexibility and agility, balanced vibrato, consistent vocal production
How and when falsetto.
Use of falsetto as a means of developing the upper mart of the modal voice
Falsetto excercies
Start softly move down to transition, loud falsetto pushed over into modal voice, start low in modal voice and jump two octaves
Vibrato faults and causes
Rate, extent, respiratory energy.
Excessive laryngeal tension, unbalanced breath support
Bleat, straight tone wobble
Bleat- pulling of ab muscles must be reduced, support mechanism brought into balance. Vocal folds in continuous phonation
Straight tone- laryngeal tension, they may hold back deliberately. Alternate two half pitches slowly gradually getting faster
Wobble- lack of vocal and physical excercise
