Q

The Lord’s Supp. - Transubstantation

A

Roman Catholic view, was formalized at the Council of Trent. When the priest consecrates the elements (bread and wine) a real change takes place. The bread becomes the flesh of Christ and wine becomes the blood of Christ.

22
Q

Transubstantiation - accidents (philosophical basis)

A

Aristotle said this. a thing’s outward, physical appearance (think of senses)

23
Q

Transubstantiation - substance (philosophical basis)

A

Aristotle said this. A thing’s essential being, a thing’s substance never changes and it is from its substance that a thing derives its identity.

24
Q

The Lord’s Supp - Consubstantiation

A

Lutheran view. The flesh and blood of Christ are “in, with, and under” the bread ad wine. The bread and wine have joined to Christ’s flesh and blood but does not literally turn into his flesh and blood. (Iron and fire, the iron has been heated, or joined, by, or with, fire) Luther disagrees w/ the Catholic use of Greek philosophy and therefore disagrees that the bread’s substance changes. A person who partakes of the supper w/ faith, really is untied to Christ’s flesh and blood. But apart from faith, it’s just bread and wine. REAL PRESENCE - YES Luther

25
Q

The Lord’s Supp - Dynamic Presence

A

Reformed view (John Calvin). Christ is spiritually present in the Lord’s Supper, but he is not physically present. REAL PRESENCE - YES. (Look over notes)

26
Q

The Lord’s Supp - Memorial View

A

Radical Reformed (Ulrich Zwingli). The bread nad wine are merely signs. They are not seals. The bread and win point to Jesus’s death and resurrection, but they are simply reminders of this past event. Nothing unique is happening in the Lord’s Supper itself. It is like a living sermon. REAL PRESENCE - NO
