A word about the church
The New Testament Church - Biblical images
The people of God, A servant people, the body of Christ, the community of the Spirit
Biblical Images - The people of God
Those people chosen by God for covenant relationship with himself.
- “I will be your God, and you will be my people (covenant formula)”
- Those people chosen by God for a special relationship and a special task (spreading Gospel)
Biblical Images - A servant people
- God sets the Israelites free so that they can serve him
- Jesus himself came to serve his people by giving his life (Mark 10:45)
- Christians need to recognize that the Christian life is a life of service, even costly service.
Biblical Images - The body of Christ
- Those people who are unitied to each other as one body, with one head (Jesus), one spirit (the HS), and one father (God the Father)
- 1 Corinthians 12 - the church is like a human body, which has many different parts, but each is important for accomplishing a shared tasks
Biblical Images - the Community of the spirit
- The church are those people who anticipates God’s future through the power of the HS
- They have seen God’s future
- They live accordingly to God’s future
1. Strangers are welcome
2. Divisions are healed
3. Power is used for the good of others
4. The weak and oppressed are valued and raised up
- The church isn’t the Kingdom of God but it should point to the Kingdom of God
Marks of the Church
What makes the Church the Church (Holy, Catholic, Apostolic)
Marks of the Church - Holy
Grounded in the holiness of Christ, accessed through the HS. The church is a community of forgiven sinners, the Church should be moving towards the holiness of Jesus (becoming more like Jesus), and they mess up, they are willing to repent and ask for forgiveness
Marks of the Church - Catholic
The church is universal/united. (but….the church is divided!) It’s for the whole world (geographical catholicity), is for the whole of humanity (anthropological catholicity), declarers the whole gospel for the whole remedy of sin (evangelical and soteriological catholicity), the church extends through the whole of time (Chronological catholicity)
The Great Schism
1054 AD. The Catholic church divided according to leadership and geography. The western church under the Bishop of Rome, is now called the Roman Catholic Church. The Eastern Church, under the bishop of Constantinople became the Eastern Orthodox Church
16th Century - Protestant Reformation
Various theological leaders wanted to reform the Roman Catholic Church, but instead were kicked out and formed Christian churched of their own - Protestant churches. (Martin Luther, John Calvin - Protestant movement divided even further [Baptist, Methodist, Lutheran, Reformed, Quaker, Mennonite, Assembly of God, Non-denom., etc])
Marks of the Church - Apostolic
is based on the teaching to the apostles. Jesus gave right and true revelation of himself to his apostle, and they passed that along to the Church (apostolic authority). In the early years of the Church, leaders who could tace their spiritual lineage back to an apostle who has apostolic authority -their teaching was considered trustworthy.
Tasks of the Church
Worship God, edify and educate believers, missions to the world
Spiritual Gifts
The HS gives special gifts/abilities to believers so that they can do and be what the church is supposed to do and be.
Spiritual Gifts (Conclusions)
Spiritual gifts are the basis for the church
Spiritual gifts are the basis for the Priesthood of all believers
Spiritual gifts are the basis for roles in the church
Sacraments – 2 definitions
- A sacrament is an outward, visible sign (material reality) of an inward, invisible grace (God’s real work on our behalf)
- An ordinance is an act which Christ ordained and therefore, which we practice us a sign of out obedience
Baptism – 2 views
Infant and Believers baptism
Infant Baptism
Based on the idea that God makes Covenants w/ whole communities (communal covenants). At birth, at confession of faith, emphasizes God’s work for us. (Communities could mean families such as Abraham and all his descendants)
Believers Baptism
The idea that baptism follows a confession of faith in Jesus Christ
The Lord’s Supper
Participating in the community of God’s people, the covenant meal
