Test 2. Modules 4 - 9 Flashcards

1
Q

What is native species provenance?

A

Provenance specificity is adaptability of species to a geographical area.
Species can be more adapted to local conditions than others.
Provenance may affect longevity and disease.

Q

What is an ecovar?

A

Short for “ecological variety.”
A plant variety developed from a collection of a native plant species selected from several to many natural populations in a specific region. The purpose is high genetic diversity in the parent collection, that reflects the natural diversity within that species in the defined region. To maintain genetic diversity in ensuing generations , little to no selection is done during the ecovar development process.

Q

What is a cultivar?

A

Short for “cultivated variety.” A plant variety developed via plant selection and/or genetic manipulation to exhibit a set of plant characteristics.

Cultivars are maintained via controlled pollination or vegetative means, so
that cultivar characteristics are passed to ensuing generations

Q

What are some advantages to broadcast seeding?

A

Randomly distributed
Can be used easily in combination with other seeding methods
Requires little equipment
Can be used with poor quality seeds
Can be used when mulch application is required

Q

What are some advantages of drill seeding?

A

Seeds can be planted at different depths
Good seed-soil contact and placement
Protects seeds from erosion and predators
Best for smooth seed beds and large size seeds
Reduces desiccation

Q

What are some disadvantages to broadcast seeding?

A

Increased desiccation of seeds
Seeds are available to predators
Wind is a problem
Uneven distribution
Higher seeding rate required compared to drilling
Lower establishment compared to drilling
Often poor results with hyroseeding and mulching

Q

What are some disadvantages of drill seeding?

A
Plants in rows - too uniform
Seperates large and small seeds
Adds carrier??
Imperfect seeds get stuck in the applicator
Can't be used on steep slopes

Q

Which elevation ranges does the Interior Douglas Fir Zone occur?

A

Mid to low elevations throughout the southern and central interior of BC. This zone often occurs above the Ponderosa Pine Zone and below the Montane Spruce Zone.

It typically is in the rainshadow of the major mountain ranges of BC. In the west it is in the rainshadow of the Coastal Mountains and in the east it is in the rainshadow of the Columbia and Purcell Mountains.
