When was the Gospel of Luke written, where was it written and who was it written to/for?
Date Written: Late 50’s-early 60’s
Place Written: No agreement exists about the place Luke wrote his Gospel.
Written to: It was intended for Christians who had a pagan background.
Who was Luke?
Luke was a well-educated gentile, a doctor, and a close friend of Paul.
He traveled with Paul and was with him near the end of his life, when Paul was alone.
Luke is mentioned in two of the four prison epistles.
How did Luke write his Gospel?
Luke carefully investigated everything from the beginning, wrote an orderly account for Theophilus to know the certainty of things taught.
Who was Theophilus?
He was most likely a Roman Nobleman who had converted to Christianity and probably not his original name.
It is believed Luke instructed him in the faith and possibly led him to Christ.
Theophilus position obviously warranted an appropriate, formal greeting.

Why is John’s gospel different from the Synoptic Gospels?
- Omissions – John omits much material, important events such as, Jesus temptation, transfiguration and the institution of the Lord’s supper, sermon on the mount, and the Lord’s prayer.
- Inclusions not found in synoptic gospels – John 2-4 material, Jesus early Galilean ministry, visits to Jerusalem before the passion, resurrection of Lazarus in John 11, the extended farewell discourse in John 13-17.

- Stands apart because at least 90 percent of it lacks direct verbal parallel found in the Synoptics.
