Epidemiology
Study of health and disease in population.
3 D’s: disease, distribution, determinants
Determinants
Reasons why people get disease. (Ex. Heredity, biology, lifestyle, etc.)
Primary Data vs. Secondary Data
Primary data is collected directly.
Secondary data is data that has already been collected.
Prevalence
The number of people in a population who have a given disease at a given point of time.
Limitations: past history only, no rate of lesion development, does not indicate active or inactive, no frequency of new lesions
Incidence
Number of new cases in a given period of time
DMFT or DMFS
Decayed Missing Filled teeth or surfaces.
Calculated by counting surfaces of molars and premolars (5) and anterior teeth (4)
SiC Index
Takes highest third of DMFT values and averages this subgroups DMFT values.
