Master Paternalism
The master is like a father to his dependents(wife, children, and slaves). His duty is to treat his slaves in a fatherly way without giving them rights
- adequate housing, food, care, etc.
- Masters were also required to ensure the spiritual guidance and salvation of their slaves
Reciprocal obligations
the slave owners took care of the slaves so in return the slaves had to be loyal and couldn’t disobey rules or run away
How was slavery different in South America?
- slaves were strictly an investment
- slave owners often didn’t live on the plantation
- mortality rates of slaves were much higher
