Indentured Servitude
- poor men couldn’t afford to pay to get to the new world so they would work for a land owner once in the new world in exchange for a free ride over
- Servants couldn’t leave the farm or have a romantic relationship without the “master’s” permission
- many servants didn’t live through the 5-7 year period of servitude
