Epistle
primarily composed of the writings of Paul; written before the gospels; the beginnings and ends are very important
Gospel
means evangelion; the good news
Two Source Hypothesis
Matthew and Luke are dependent on Mark as well as Q; John is separate.
The Gospel of Mark
earliest gospel; includes jewish customs; very abrupt (no infancy, no mary, no Lord’s prayer)
The Gospel of Matthew
not actually written by matthew; geneology+infancy narratives; highly structured; written for Jews
Pharisees
Interpret the law; Pharisees were rivals of the Sadducees (who were more elite priest of temples)
The Gospel of Luke
less concerned with the end of the world and more concerned with how you should act (beatitudes); aware of other gospels
The Gospel of John
focuses on sermons and the ideas which Jesus taught, not concerned with how Jesus progressed from place to place but rather what he taught there
Apologetic
defends a certain position (that of early christians)
Pax Romana
means “Roman Peace”; people felt as though Christians were responsible for the fall of the Roman Empire because they changed their religion
Parable
a story which jesus used to get his message across; it is a simple story which contains a much deeper meaning
Sermon on the Mount
Jesus doesn’t disregard the law, he fulfills it; draws out the heart of the Law
Saul of Tarsus
persecutor of the church; Jesus appears to him so he converts to “the way”; changed name to Paul; missionary to Gentiles
Philippians
Paul’s letter to Christians in Philippi from jail; writing is joyful and Paul views himself as a role model for being persecuted
Bartimaeus
leper who calls out to Jesus, Jesus turns around and heals him, follows Jesus along the way
