Test 2 Flashcards
Define biological effects
The effects of the sound wave upon the biologic tissue
Define sound
A type of wave that carries energy, not matter, from place to place
Five characteristics of sound
- created by the vibration of a moving object
- a series of compressions and rarefactions
- sound must travel through a medium
- sound is a mechanical, longitudinal wave
- sound travels in a straight line
Three acoustic variables
Pressure, density, distance
Define pressure and its units
Concentration of force within an area / pascals (Pa)
Define density and name its units
Concentration of mass within a volume / kg/cm3
Define distance and name its units
Measure of particle motion / cm, feet, miles
define transverse wave
Move in perpendicular direction to the wave
Define longitudinal wave
Moves the same direction as the wave
Name the seven parameters that describe a wave
- period
- frequency
- amplitude
- power
- intensity
- wavelength
- speed
Define compressions
Regions of higher density and pressure
Define rarefactions
Regions of lower density and pressure
What do acoustic variables tell us?
Inform us of which waves are sound waves
What is acoustic propagation properties?
The effects of the medium upon the sound wave
