Test 2/20/14 Flashcards
observation
information gathered using the 5 senses
inference
logical explanation based on prior knowledge
hypothesis
testable prediction “if…then..”
chemical reaction
a reaction when a chemical interacts with a different chemical
control
does not change throughout the whole procedure
evidence
a statement that proves something is right
product
an article or substance that is manufactured or refined for sale
reactant
a substance that takes part in and undergoes a change in a chemical reaction
reclamation
to retrieve or recover
filtrate
a liquid that has been passed through a filter
surface water
water on the surface (river, stream, ocean)
groundwater
water in the ground (well, aquifer)
aquifer
water stored underground in a bedrock
biological contamination
when a living or once living organism enter the water (mold, fungi, poop)
chemical contamination
when chemicals like fertilizer or gas get into the water from the street drains
temperature
a measure of the average kinetic energy of a substance
phases change due to
potential energy
potential energy
energy due to position
kinetic energy
energy of motion
when the temp. is changing it is
kinetic energy
when the phase is changing it is
potential energy
solid has a
definate shape
what is happening when a shape changes
the molecules are either spreading or coming together
when is a melting point
0 degrees celsius
how would you react if you were in willow grove and you discovered your water was contaminated
i would try to get people aware of the situation and tell them why it is dangerous.
what are some types of water pollution
biological types would be a living or once living organism that enters that water. This could vary from human waste to mold or fungi (e. coli, cryptosperidium). Chemical would be something like gas or exhaust from a car or fertilizer from the your lawn.
why do phases change
a change in potential energy
what is an aquifer
water that is stored underground with a bedrock
what is a phase of matter
solid, liquid, gas
liquid to solid
freezing
solid to liquid
melting
a+bc——->ac+b
single replacement
zinc+copper chloride——->copper+zinc chloride
single replacement
pq+rs——->ps+rq
double replacement
watershed
groundwater
solid
definite shape, molecules are touching in a fixed position
liquid
no definite shape but molecules are still touching
gas
no definite shape or volume molecules are separate. constant motion
if the tempature has gone from -4 to 0
kinetic
if a substance is melting
increase in potential
if a substance is freezing
decrease in potential
what are some types of groundwater
aquifer, watershed, well
what are some types of surface water
ponds, oceans, rivers, etc.
