He is a Greek legend whose name means “forethought”, he’s a titan. He stole fire (symbolizes technology and civilization)from Zeus to give to humans because his brother (Epimetheus, “afterthought’”) gave away all the other gifts to animals. Him and his brother were given the task of creating life. He is punished by getting his sides torn out day after day.

They are the original chemists, they are protoscientists from the medieval period. They want to change base metals into gold (Philosophers stone).They’re searching for the elixir of life to create immortality.

When the thunderstorm takes place and he sees a gigantic oak tree destroyed by lightening and is impressed by the power of nature. His father also gives an explanation of the event using natural science and he is very moved by the explanatory power of the modern sciences
How do Krempe and Waldman differ in how they view alchemy?
Krempe sees alchemy as completely useless nonsense and that modern science is utterly good. Waldman see the history of alchemy as a foundation for modern science, he sees a continuity between the two. Modern science grows from alchemy
How will victor combined alchemy with modern science?
He uses the powerful tools, technology, and knowledge from modern science as a means to achieving one of the primary ends of the alchemists- the search for the elixir of life.
