Test Flashcards
Energy level
The fixed value that an electron may have
Orbital
A region in space around the nucleus of an atom where there is a high probability of finding an electron
Isotope
Atoms of the same element but with different atomic numbers/mass due to the different number of neutrons in the nucleus
Relative atomic mass
The average mass of an isotope taking into account their natural abundances compared to 1/12 of the C-12 isotope
Atomic radius
Half the distance between 2 nuclei of the element that are joined together by a covalent bond
First ionisation energy
The minimum energy required to remove the most loosely bound electron from a neutral gaseous atom
Octet rule
In an electron arrangement, electrons tend to have 8 electrons in its outermost shell
Hydrogen bonds
Particular dipole-dipole attractions that a hydrogen atom will bond will bond with N,O,F (strongest, intermolecular)
Electronegativity
The relative attraction that an atom in a molecule has for a shared pair of electrons in a covalent bond
Van der Waals
The weak forces between molecules resulting in temp dipoles
